THE CITY OF DNIEPROPETROVSK

MMET*04 will be held at the Dniepropetrovsk National University (DNU), which is one of the leading centers of science and education in Ukraine. Dniepropetrovsk is located at the Dnieper River in the center of East Ukraine (map) and has a population of 1.1 million. Large and beautiful, it is the main city of this part of Ukraine http://gorod.dp.ua/eng/.

The old fortress settlement existed since the middle of the 16-th century. The new town was founded in 1776 in the rein of Empress Catherine II and named Yekaterinoslav in her honor. The foundation of the city is directly connected with name of the Russian Prince Potyomkin. The Student's Palace of DNU, the venue of the conference, is a former Potyomkin's Palace.

In 1926 the city was renamed Dniepropetrovsk. Dniepropetrovsk has been the major center of the steel industry from the beginning of the 20-th century until today. In the space era, it became famous thanks to establishment here, since 1959, of the "Yuzhmash" heavy industry - one of three major missile and booster production complexes in the USSR. Design Bureau "Yuzhnoye" is independent R&D organization engaged in the development of various space-borne microwave systems.

Today the city is a large trade, finance and industrial center of Eastern and Central Ukraine and the third city in population in this country. Besides of DNU, there are 14 other universities, academies, and university-level educational establishments in Dniepropetrovsk, and a large scientific community.
